Also known as isopropyl alcohol. It is a colorless, flammable chemical compound with a strong odor, with the chemical formula C₃H₈O.

It is used in the production of various industrial and household chemicals and is a common ingredient in chemicals such as antiseptics, disinfectants, and detergents. It is used as a direct hand sanitizer (75% aqueous solution) or for the production of disinfectant wipes (wipes are soaked in a 60-70% aqueous isopropanol solution). Isopropyl alcohol is used as a water drying agent to prevent outer ear inflammation.

Solvent. Isopropyl alcohol dissolves many non-polar compounds. It also evaporates quickly and, compared to ethanol, leaves almost no greasy residue, and is also relatively non-toxic compared to alternative solvents. Thus, it is widely used as a solvent and as a cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving fats.

Examples of material applicability include cleaning electronic devices, such as contact pins (e.g., in ROM cartridges), magnetic tape and disk heads (such as audio and video recorders and floppy disk drives), laser lenses of optical disk drives (e.g., CD, DVD), and removing thermal paste from radiators and IC packages (e.g., CPU).
